Paige used beautiful pattern washi tapes to created a striped background for her lovely layout. She matted her photos and added some wavy edges to match some of the wavy washi, also adding some embellishment clusters too. Learn more at the Paige Taylor Evans blog.
Washi tape is a type of decorative masking style tape, it’s low tack and semi transparent, it comes on solid colors and patterns and has been used in crafting for a long time. It became popular for paper crafting like journaling, scrapbooking and card making a few years ago and it’s still really trendy. Unique changes have been created in recent years too with washi tape that’s shaped or that comes in large sheets or wide rolls. I love using it to create borders, backgrounds and to tape down photos and flat embellishments. It’s a quick and easy way to add color, pattern and texture to your layouts. So, let’s take a look at some scrapbook layouts that use washi tape.

Jil used washi tape to create easy hinges for her hidden journaling. She journaled on the page and then placed the tape partially to the back of the photo and partially to the page base, folding it over for a simple flap. Her mixed media page also has lots of stamping too. Take a closer look at The Cherry on Top blog.
This beautiful layout uses washi tape in two ways. The first in a ombre’ of blue washi tapes on cream cardstock to create the background, the other is die cutting different tapes with heart shaped dies to created a large clusters of them down the center. I spotted this idea on the Altenew blog.
Nathalie used washi tape to separate the large corner triangles of pattern paper on her Traveler’s Notebook spread. Her serene January layout has cozy colors, snowflakes, stars and a black and white photo that works so well with the color scheme. She breaks it all down at the Cocoa Daisy blog.
Jana’s wonderful layout uses washi tape for a striped background but she took it a step further and stitched down the center of each strip for added texture. There’s also lots of depth with many chipboard shapes and puffy alphabet letters too. Find all the details at the Jana Eubank blog.
These stunning memory planner pages uses washi tape that is next level, with designs that have lots of layered images, sentiments and words or have an entire scene printed on them. It was used to create borders around the page edges as well as to hold down the photos. I came across this layout on the Vee Journals Instagram page.
Some companies even make dies that coordinate with their washi tape so you can cut out shapes and have washi stickers. Anglia did just that on this beautiful floral double page spread. She added washi flowers on all the journaling and photo corners as well as on the letters of the banner too. Find more info at the Wild Violets Art blog.
I also wanted to share some ideas using “faux” washi tape like Caly did on her photo card. She used clear stamps that are made to look like washi tape, making it look like the photo is held down with tape but it’s actually stamped and die cut. Watch her process video at the Simon Says Stamp blog.
Here’s another washi striped background but Brianna added hers add an angle and tore the edges to be different lengths. To balance the stripe sshe added triangles of pattern paper in the corners and there’s lots of layers of embellishments around the trio of photos too. I came across her idea on the Simple Stories Instagram page.
Here’s another fun faux washi tape, this time it’s digital. Rows of this faux tape are layered under heart openings with faux stitching around the edges of each one. There’s also faux felt flowers and faux chalk writing, all of which could be reproduced with physical products as well. These digis come from The Lilypad.
This double page layout uses washi tape all over to create borders, stripes, photo mats, to adhere down photos and embellishments and even for a small area to journal on. Learn more at the Masking Tape blog.
You can create custom depth and texture by layering and over lapping washi tapes, since they are semi transparent some of the pattern and color from beneath will show through. This journaling page really shows off this technique with a tan and brown color combo of over lapping clusters and strips of different tape. Find out more at The Washi Tape Shop blog.
I hope you’ve been inspired to grab some washi tape and give it a try on your next layout.
